The place of the servant.

After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet." (John 13:5, 12-14) What was Jesus trying to set His disciples up for in the long term?

Why would this have been surprising in this culture? Have you seen any surprising displays of servanthood recently?

What does it look like for you to apply this passage to your context today? Who are the people you are serving and what does that look like? What do you think about foot washing? Should we do it? Have you done it? What have your experiences been like?

What was something new you thought of with the introduction of the Roman triclinium setup?

"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." - Philippians 2:5-8

What was it that Jesus emptied Himself of?
